A Zone 2 training app for iPhone and Apple Watch

Hold the easy effort that builds your base. Motionry fills your screen with your heart rate zone while you ride, run or walk, so you can see Zone 2 at a glance.

What Zone 2 is

Zone 2 is the easy, conversational effort that sits between a warm-up and real work. Long sessions there build your aerobic base without leaving you wrecked for the next day.

In Motionry it is the Endurance zone: 60 to 70% of your max heart rate. For a max of 184 bpm, that is 110 to 128 bpm. The heart rate zone calculator gives you yours.

How Motionry shows Zone 2

While you move, the live screen shows your heart rate, the zone name and a bar of five segments. In Zone 2 the heart rate turns teal and the second segment lights up, so a glance is enough. If you drift up into Zone 3, it turns lime.

The same screen works for rides, runs and walks, and your heart rate and zone also appear on the iPhone Lock Screen while you record.

Set up Zone 2 in a few minutes

  1. Open Motionry and set your max heart rate. The app can estimate it from your age, or you can enter your own if you know it. You see your five zones before you start.
  2. Note your Zone 2 range. At a max of 184 it is 110 to 128 bpm.
  3. Pick your heart rate source: your Apple Watch, with no strap needed, or a Bluetooth chest strap such as a Polar H10.
  4. Choose ride, run or walk, and start.
  5. Keep the heart rate teal. If it climbs to lime, ease off until it comes back.
  6. Afterwards, Motionry Pro shows the time you spent in each zone, so you can see how much of the session was really Zone 2.

Is 60 to 70% right for you?

There is no single definition of Zone 2. Motionry uses 60 to 70% of max heart rate. Coaches also use the talk test (you can speak in full sentences, but not sing), lab tests, or formulas such as 180 minus your age, and these can land a little higher or lower.

Treat the range as a starting point and let the talk test settle it. Our guide to finding your Zone 2 heart rate compares the methods. If you are not sure about your max, the calculator also offers Tanaka's formula, which is often closer for people over 40.

Questions

Do I need an Apple Watch for Zone 2 training?

You need a heart rate source. An iPhone has no heart rate sensor of its own, so Motionry reads it from an Apple Watch or from a Bluetooth chest strap.

Is Zone 2 in the free plan?

Yes. Live heart rate zones, GPS recording and the Lock Screen Live Activity are free. Motionry Pro adds charts such as time in zones, the route map coloured by zone, and video and sticker shares.

Does it work for running and walking too?

Yes. Ride, run and walk share the same five zones.

Which iPhones does it need?

Motionry requires iOS 26. An Apple Watch is optional.

Hold the right effort.
